Marcel Patrick Deslandes
Marcel Patrick Deslandes, 68, of Newport Center, died on August 22, 2024, in Newport. He was born on March 17, 1956, in Newport to Nelson and Jeannette (Girouard) Deslandes.
Marcel graduated from North Country Union High School in the class of 1974. Growing up he worked on the family farm and worked for Krafts in Troy for 12 years. Later he and his brother established Deslandes logging for 40 years. Hunting and fishing were his glory.
He is survived by his brother Raymond Deslandes and his wife, Brenda, of Jay, and by his sister Yvette Marsh and her husband, Danny, of Jay. He loved his cat Papone.
He was predeceased by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, September 5, at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Reverend Roger Charbonneau. Eric A. Gilfillan
Eric A. Gilfillan, 85, of Derby, died on August 22, 2024, at his home. He was born on December 6, 1938, in Brownington to Nye and Marion (Moore) Gilfillan.
He was a project manager for IBM for many years. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, trapping, auto racing, and snowmobile racing.
Eric is survived by his children: Valerie Bomberger and her husband, Chris, of Michigan, and Mona Lisa Gilfillan of Derby. He is also survived by his siblings: Willis Gilfillan and his wife, Betty, of Island Pond, Dick Curtis of Connecticut, and Marline Gillfillan of Holland, as well as by many nieces and nephews from Connecticut, Florida, Tennessee, and Vermont. He is also survived by his former wife, Lorraine Gilfillan, of New Hampshire. He was predeceased by his siblings: Anna Curtis, Gilbert Gilfillan, Raymond Gilfillan, and Nye Gilfillan.
A celebration of his life will be held in the summer of 2025. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Coventry Tuesday Senior Meals at the Coventry Town Office or an animal charity of one’s choice. Online condolences are welcomed at curtis-britch.com.
Robert Harrison Lewis
Robert Harrison Lewis, born November 4, 1948, in Newport, to Arthur and Doris (Twombly) Lewis, died August 27, 2024, peacefully at his home in Hardwick, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Jo (Wolfgram) Lewis, sister Linda Chewning, daughter Megan Koehler, step-children Erica and Chad Wolfgram, grandchildren Andrew, Amber, Cierra, Cydney, Carter, and several great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by brother Terry and sister Martha.
Rob served proudly as an Army Ranger of the 173D Airborne Brigade in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969. Upon returning from the war, Rob received a degree in finance and used his education as a financial advisor in California, then later as an economic developer in Michigan. Having grown up in a family who owned a local grocery store in Derby, his passion for growing small businesses was evident with his work in Holt, Michigan, where he took a small farm town to a thriving Main Street USA. He was influential in bringing life to his own community and took pride in providing financial resources to local business, which carried over to his work as town manager in Hardwick.
Throughout his life, Rob enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, reading, and had so much love for dogs. Upon retirement, he enjoyed Tuesday night golf club, boating, and spending time with his family on Seymour Lake. His love of the Northeast Kingdom was expressed through his beautiful flower garden and passion for the outdoors.
Rob will be remembered for his wit and sense of humor, love of food and family. A celebration of life will be held later this fall.
