Hanford E. “Jack” Biron
Hanford E. “Jack” Biron, 92, of Derby and Norton died in Newport on Tuesday August 25, 2015.
He was born on May 18, 1923, in Norton to Joseph and Eva (Pelletier) Biron. In 1951, he married Nina “Jean” Bates, who predeceased him in 2001.
He graduated from Brighton High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 1943 to February 1945. He worked on the family farm, was a Railway Mail Agent and eventually went to work for U.S. Customs in Morses Line, Island Pond, Norton, Derby Line, and Newport, retiring in 1978 as a Supervisory Inspector.
Mr. Biron was a member of the Island Pond American Legion, a past president and director of the Orlex Credit Union, former lister of the Town of Norton, as well as many other positions.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling to many different areas of the country. He liked gardening, tree farming, coin collecting, hunting, fishing
, and especially spending time at his camp in Norton with his family.
Mr. Biron is survived by his children: Dale Biron and his wife, Debbie, and Bonnie Birchard and her husband, Dean; his grandsons: Matthew and Adam Birchard, and Devan Biron. He is also survived by his brother Clifford Biron of Island Pond; and his sisters: Pearl Brissette of Michigan, Elizabeth Biron of Newport, and Pauline Wolf and her husband, Gil, of California; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter Bette Ann Biron in 2010; and by two brothers: Wilfred and Edward.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 37 Lake Road, Newport, Vermont with the Reverend John Genco officiating with full military honors to follow. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 2, from 1 p.m. until the hours of the funeral. A turkey dinner will follow at the American Legion in Newport.

Edith May Cargill
Edith May Cargill, 95, of Derby died on August 23, 2015, in Newport.
She was born on June 4, 1920 in East Charleston to Howard and Bertha (Lassonde) Nichols.
She married Merle Gray, who predeceased her. She later married Glen Griffin, who also predeceased her, and on October 19, 1963 she married Lyle James Cargill, who predeceased her on December 16, 2013.
Mrs. Cargill was a member of the First Congregational Church in Island Pond and she was also a Girl Scout leader.
Her hobbies included family genealogy, sewing, knitting, and making crafts and cakes.
She is survived by her children: Stuart Gray and his wife, Janice, of Concord, and Reginald Gray and his wife, Colleen, of Charlotte; her stepchildren: Gary Griffin and his wife, Jeanine, of Brandon, Brian Cargill of Monkton, Colleen Gray of Charlotte, Duane Cargill of Great Falls, and Dwight Cargill of Fairfax; her sister Ruth Seidell of Enfield, Connecticut; her brother Rendall Nichols of Newport; many grandchildren; and great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother Rodney Nichols; and by her sister Marjorie Crouss.
A graveside service was held on Friday August 28, at the Derby Line Cemetery with the Reverend John Genco officiating.

William Collins
William Collins, 68, of Westfield died on August 25, 2015, in Newport.
He was born on August 3, 1947, in Newport to Durward and Rita (Breault) Collins. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport and served in the Vermont Air National Guard.
Mr. Collins was a building contractor for Gerard Pion and Sons Construction Company of Lowell. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, coaching little league and basketball in the Westfield area, and also played baseball. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping in the woods and watching westerns on television.He is survived by his sons: Joel Collins and his wife, Melissa, of Newport, and Peter Collins and his friend Darlene Peters of Hancock; his grandchildren: Morgan of Newport Center, and Justin of Barton; his great-grandchildren: Ivy and Robert; his brother Paul Collins and his wife, Ann, of Newport; his sisters: Carolyne Lesperance and her husband, Gordon, of Westfield, and Susan Pion and her husband, Gerard, of Lowell; his brother-in-law Stewart Niles of Shirley, Massachusetts; and by his former wife Cheryl Houston Collins of Troy.
He was predeceased by his parents: Rita Collins on July 17, 2009, and Durward Collins on October 20, 2014; and by his sister Pamela Niles in 2013.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, August 29, at the Newport Center Cemetery with the Reverend David DiZazzo officiating. Full military honors were held.

Elwin W. Dean
Elwin W. Dean, 91, of Derby Line died on August 27, 2015, in Newport.
He was born on March 6, 1924 in Orleans, a son of Levi and Altheda (Metcalf) Dean.
On May 29, 1953, he married Patricia Chapdelaine, who survives him.
Mr. Dean served 42 years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked as the head of Veterans Affairs in Vermont.
He was a selectman in Coventry for many years. He was a member of the Coventry Congregational Church and the Orleans Federated Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He enjoyed listening to and playing country music on his guitar and he also played the clarinet and the saxophone. Mr. Dean loved farming, driving his tractor, and he played semi-pro-baseball. He was valedictorian of his class and was also inducted in the Orleans County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. He loved his family and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.
Mr. Dean spent his life defending our country and helping others. He was a wise and gentle man who will be missed by many.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Dean, of Derby Line; and their two children: Wayne Dean and his wife, Elizabeth, of Westbrook, Connecticut, and Christy Dean-Dunn and her husband, Matthew, of Middletown, Connecticut. He was loved by four grandchildren: Nicole, Jacob, Matthew, and Amy Dean; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dean was predeceased by a son Elwin Dean Jr.; and brothers and sisters: Mike, Lyle, Ray, Elaine and Thelma.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday September 5, at 2 p.m. at the Orleans Federated Church with the Reverend Nathan Strong officiating. Friends may call on September 5, at the church from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow at the Coventry Cemetery with full military honors.

Raymond R. Phillips
Raymond R. Phillips, 73, of Hyde Park, died on August 29, 2015, at his home after a long battle with cancer.
He was the fifth child born to Louis and Catherine (Weeks) Phillips.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed sitting and telling fish stories with his great-grandson Levi. He also enjoyed going to powwows and meeting new family members.
He was a longtime employee of the St. Johnsbury and Lamoille County Railroad until it closed as the Lamoille Valley Railroad. He enjoyed the job and the many friends he made there.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife of 51 years, Roxie (Germain) Phillips; his son Raymond and his wife, Ann, of North Troy; his daughters: Melody of Hyde Park, and Francine of Derby; his youngest son Timothy of North Troy; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren, plus three more on the way. He is also survived by his siblings: Albert “Tom” Phillips and his wife, Shirley, of Belmont, New Hampshire, Margaret Young of Claremont, New Hampshire, Richard and Cory of North Carolina, Ralph and Darlene of Ludlow, Susan and her husband, Leo Dagesse, of Derby, Michael and his wife, Barbie, of Johnson, Deborah and her husband, Charley Phillips, of Fair Haven; many nieces and nephews; and his two fur babies Precious Angel, and Lacy J.
Mr. Phillips, who has gone to his Lord and Savior, was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and by a grandson.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, at the Mountainview Cemetery in Lowell, with the Pastor Alden Lauver officiating. Friends may call at the cemetery on Thursday, September 3, from noon until the hour of the service.

Mary Patricia (McGue) Rowell
Mary P. Rowell, 86, of Highgate Falls, died on Sunday afternoon, August 23, 2015, in St.Albans, at the Franklin County Rehabilitation Center, with loving family at her side.
Mrs. Rowell and her beloved husband, Willard, lived for many years in the Fairfax community. Following the onset of health issues, they made their home near family in Highgate Falls.
Born in Fairfield on April 21, 1929, Mrs. Rowell was the daughter of the late Ralph Sheridan McGue, and Harriet (Clay) McGue. She graduated high school from Mount St. Mary’s in Burlington, Class of 1947.
On October 20, 1951, she married Willard Rowell, of Albany, a young gentleman who had studied at Champlain College. The young couple wanted their own farm, and hoped to raise a family. The Rowells later owned and operated a sizeable dairy farm in Albany, where they raised a family of six. During years of lean milk pricing, Mr. Rowell frequently worked construction on oil and gas pipelines to supplement the farm income. Mrs. Rowell was then charged with managing farm operations and addressing family needs, often for months at a time. She was a tireless worker, had great compassion for others, and proved herself many times as a well-seasoned business manager.
During the late 1970s the Rowells moved to Fairfax to care for family, and eventually purchased her parents’ home there.
Mrs. Rowell had a discerning eye for fashion and her home was beautifully furnished. She bought and sold antiques for many years, and with a smile would tell you, “It had its rewards.”
While the barn sale seemed to pique her interest, it was the people she most enjoyed. Perceived as an opportunity, gardening offered a tranquil moment. Her beautiful flower gardens and vegetables were always nicely tended. She was proud of her family, she was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed large family gatherings. She was an avid reader, found board games, cards, and puzzles enjoyable, but most of all she was a kind person, a devoted wife, and loving mother.
Mrs. Rowell was predeceased by her husband of nearly 60 years.
She is survived by her six children: Bill Rowell and his wife, Nancy (Rollins), of Highgate, Brian Rowell and his wife, Tammy (Pilbin), of Highgate, Steven Rowell and his wife, Carmie (Maietta), of Hinesburg, Jane (Rowell) Fisher and her husband, Chuck, of Irasburg, Carolyn (Rowell) Powers and her husband, Stephen, of Anderson, South Carolina, John Rowell and his wife, Tina (Reicker), of Saint John, New Brunswick; her grandchildren: Elizabeth and her husband, Andrew, Matthew, Megan, Michael, Anthony, Emily and her husband, Jenoah, Anna and her husband, Craig, Patricia and her husband Nathan, Jennifer, Nikki and her husband, John, Kristina and her husband, Robbie, Joshua, and Jenna; great grandchildren: Peyton, Xavier, Landon, Derek, Myles, Charlie, Hayley, Asa, Jonathon, and Julia; one sister, Kathleen (Thomas) Bott, of Plainville, Connecticut; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her sisters: Elizabeth Jacobs of Florida, Carol Sheridan of Connecticut, and Marguerite Chambers of Texas; and by her infant brother Patrick McGue of Fairfax.
The Rowell family would like to offer their gratitude to the caregivers at Mrs. Rowell’s residence, Franklin County Home Health, Northwestern Medical Center, Franklin County Rehabilitation Center, Am Care, and Missisquoi Valley Rescue for their care, compassion, and support.
A funeral service was held on Friday, August 28, at the Kidder Memorial Home, in Swanton. Father Maurice J. Roy officiated. Interment was at the Rowell family lot in the Albany Village Cemetery, where a graveside service was held on Saturday, August 29. The Reverend Nathan Strong officiated.

Lance J. Tabor
Lance J. Tabor, 29, of Brownington died suddenly on August 20, 2015, in Newport.
He was born on March 21, 1986, in Newport, to Cindy (Little) Bernier and Larry Tabor Jr.
He was a carpenter for Gochie Carpentry in Lyndon. Among his hobbies were fishing, swimming, camping and football. He also loved sliding with his kids.
He is survived by his children: Ryah and Kylie both of Barton; his mother, Cindy Bernier of Newport; his father, Larry Tabor Jr. of Jay; his girlfriend Amanda Gochie of Lyndon; and by three sisters: Brooklyn Bernier and her boyfriend Nathan Green of Newport, Taylor Bernier and her boyfriend Ben Ste. Marie of Derby, and Kayla Bernier of North Carolina. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents: Lawrence Tabor Sr. of Derby, and Ann Tabor of Newport; his maternal grandparents: Albina Flanders of Newport, and Frederick Little and his wife, Beth, of Newport Center; his four nieces: Rayna, Hailey, Rowan and Olivia; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his stepfather Paul Bernier.

Joyce A. Westover
Joyce A. Westover, 83, of Barton went to be with our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 11, 2015. She was born on February 29, 1932, in Brownington, to the late Ralph and Gertrude (White) Whitcomb.
Mrs. Westover graduated from Barton Academy in 1950 where she excelled at her studies. She was a bookkeeper and office manager at several business establishments during her career years.
She loved to read The Bible and developed a strong faith in the Lord, which she loved to share. Many a close friendship was made at Solid Rock Assembly in Brownington Center Church and at the Sutton Freewill Baptist Church. She loved her children, family, friends, pets, road trips, many adventures, and sharing a meal. Gardening and feeding the hummingbirds were pleasurable activities. She had a heart of gold and was a champion for those less fortunate. She believed in the Second Amendment and was an avid, supporting member of the Rod and Gun Club.
Her family and friends will miss her greatly but will rejoice in knowing that she has moved to her heavenly home with her Lord and Savior.
Mrs. Westover was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Gertrude (White) Whitcomb; her sister Beatrice Berggren and her husband, Norman; and her brother Gordon Whitcomb. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Carl Larose, and her second husband, Lawrence Westover, as well as by daughter-in-law Janice Larose and granddaughter-in-law Xantippie Larose.
She is survived by her children: Carlene Larose of Connecticut, Donna Larose-Baginski and her husband, Paul, of Florida; Betty Larose of Vermont; Clarence “Buzz” Larose of Vermont; Ed Westover of Vermont; and Barry Westover of Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Heather Larose of North Carolina; Christopher Larose and his son Dylan and daughters Kayana, Kaylene and Kaydriene of Vermont; Holly Larose and her son Isaiah of North Carolina; Carl Larose and his wife, Valerie, and their son Daniel, of Connecticut; Monica Larose of Vermont; Roany Meyer of Massachusetts; Brittany Howard (Westover) and her husband, Chase, of Georgia; and Ryan Westover of Washington. She is also survived by her sister in-law Florence Whitcomb and by many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service was held at Solid Rock Assembly of God Church in Barton on August 22 at noon.
