ISLAND POND — If Governor Phil Scott had a soothsayer on staff he might have scheduled this year’s trip to Essex County for Tuesday rather than Monday.  Had he made that choice, he would have seen the first boil of the season at the Sweet Tree plant here.

Joe Russo, the plant’s manager, said sap was running and trucks would bring sap concentrate in overnight.  He said the company has 450,000 taps in Brighton, Westmore, and other parts of the area. The Governor and many members of his cabinet toured Essex County Tuesday, as part of his Capitol for a Day program.  A visit to the state’s biggest sugarmaker was only part of the program.
