NEWPORT — After hearing 39-year-old Joel R. Gouin, listed in court records as homeless, plead guilty to a collection of felonies, including two charges of burglary, negligent driving while eluding an officer, aggravated car theft, and possession of stolen property, Judge Rory Thibault sentenced him to serve from four years and six months to ten years in prison. Mr. Gouin also pled guilty to the misdemeanor charges of unlawful mischief, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
For its part the state dismissed charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of stolen property, and grand larceny, all felonies, along with driving at excessive speed and unlawful trespass in an occupied residence.
Orleans County Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Cotnoir’s affidavit says that on December 28, 2023, he was dispatched to Lake Region Road in Irasburg to investigate a reported burglary. The owner of the home said she had been there since December 21, 2023. When she arrived that day, she noticed drag marks outside the house’s front door.
