Man denies keeping woman from escaping a beating

NEWPORT — Newport City Police Patrolman Colin Sykes said he and Patrolman Cody Smith were called to a Pleasant Street address around 9:27 a.m. on June 8, to investigate a reported assault.  A woman called police, Patrolman Sykes’ affidavit says, and said a woman she did not know said she had been assaulted and had facial injuries.

Patrolman Sykes said the woman was sitting on the porch when he arrived.  He said she was barefoot, had messy hair, and had blood, swelling, and bruising on the bridge of her nose.

The woman told Patrolman Sykes she had been kept from leaving an apartment on the same street and been beaten, the affidavit says.  It says Jennifer L. Sanville, 40, of Troy was the only one who hit her. Ms. Sanville pled innocent to a felony charge of aggravated assault and criminal threatening in the case and was ordered held without bail by Judge Rory Thibault.

According to Patrolman Sykes, Stanley Crowe, 52, of Brownington was present when she was beaten and actively blocked her from leaving the apartment to get help.
