Jean Paul Couture, 85, of Westfield died on March 26, 2012, in Newport.
He was born in St. Valerien, Quebec, on April 25, 1926, to Hormidas and Blanche (Champigny) Couture.
He came to Westfield in April of 1947 to work on a farm. In Westfield he met the love of his life, Theresa Pion. They were married on August 23, 1948. They then moved back to Ste. Cecile-de-Milton, Quebec, to manage the family farm. Two years later with two young children they returned to Westfield to purchase Theresa’s parents’ family farm on Buck Hill where they stayed until 1963. During those years they managed to build up a very good dairy. They were one of the first in the area to use artificial insemination in the ’50s, one of the first farms to install a bulk milk tank and mechanical barn cleaner. They were also some of the first to install plastic tubing in their sugarbush in the ’50s.
In 1963 they moved down to the Westfield “village” farm, which is now owned by their son Jacques and his wife, Pauline, known as Couture’s Maple Shop and B&B. From that time on, he transitioned into establishing an excavating business which he ran with his sons until he retired and sold the business to his son Andre, now known as Couture’s Sand and Gravel.
Mr. Couture’s interests were the outdoors, nature and animals — feeding wild birds, watching for wildlife, gardening, mowing his lawn, and plowing driveways. He took pride in keeping his home and properties in good order, always doing maintenance and home improvements. He loved music, especially from his French Canadian heritage. He was known for playing the spoons. Most of all he enjoyed his family and his church. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Troy where after retiring he was an altar server for daily Masses and funerals. He was one of the original members of the Holy Name Society in the ’50s and ’60s, a charter member of the Troy Council 7943 Knights of Columbus and a Fourth Degree member of Gibbons Council. In 1969 he and his wife joined the Cursillo and Ultreya Movement. Along with his wife, he was an associate member of the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He remained active with these until his health prevented it.
He is survived by his wife Theresa and his children: Sister Monique, FCSCJ, of Littleton, New Hampshire, Jacques and his wife, Pauline, of Westfield, Jean and his wife, Kathy, of Troy, Michel and his wife, Terry, of Presque Isle, Maine, Andre and his wife, Raelene, of Coventry, Suzanne Kennison of Westfield, Denise and her husband, Bob Currier, of Newport, Louise and her husband, Brian Bonvechio, of Newport, and Ann and her husband, Greg Starr, of Beaconsfield, Quebec; by his 27 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Therese and her husband, Marcel Maheu, of Roxton Pond, Quebec, Claire Mance Brodeur of Granby, Quebec, and Lise and her husband, Marc Ghaddar, of Eastman, Quebec; by his brother Charles and his wife, Huguette, of Granby; by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Philippe Piche of St. Pie-de-Bagot, Quebec, Denise Couture of Rock Forest, Quebec, Joyce Pion of Newport, Bernadette Chamberland of Newport, Mary and her husband, Norman Turgeon, of Newport, and Norman and his wife, Alice Pion, of Allenstown, New Hampshire; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Holly Couture; his parents; his brother Roch; his sisters: Jeanne D’Arc Piche and Lucienne Dagenais; his brother-in-law Lucien Dagenais; his wife’s parents: Joseph and Rose-Anna Pion; and by his brother-in-law Paul Pion.
Funeral services were held on March 31, in Troy. Interment followed in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell.

Duane L. Gullard
Duane L. Gullard, 71, of West Charleston, died on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, after a long illness.
He was born on February 9, 1941, in Moorhead, Minnesota, the son of Emery and Marion (Jacobson) Gullard. On March 6, 1976, he married Linda Beaupre who survives him.
He graduated from Lake Park Minnesota High School in 1959. Soon after high school he joined the United States Army and was a member of the eighty-second Airborne Division where he mastered the art of flying various models of planes.
Mr. Gullard worked in farming and construction most of his life. In the early 1960s he painted bridges in Alaska and later he returned to Minnesota where he farmed and built homes. In the early ’80s he and his family moved to Brewster, Massachusetts, where he owned a large construction business, and was partner and developer of Brewster Green, a time-share resort. When he retired, he and his wife moved to Vermont where he farmed and became well known as a breeder of quality Labradors.
He will always be remembered for his love and devotion to his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Alaska and Minnesota in his earlier years. He loved to play cards and especially enjoyed traveling with friends and family. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife Linda Gullard of West Charleston, and by his children: Donna Hershey and her husband, Jeff, of Athol, Idaho, Duane Gullard of Pauyallup, Washington, Cindy Messier and her husband, Dale, of Spirit Lake, Idaho, and Brandon Wirth and his wife, Jamie, of Mahnomenn, Minnesota. He is also survived by two grandsons: Jeffrey and Gavin; and by the following brothers and sisters: Gary Gullard and his wife, Betty, of Olivia, Minnesota, James Gullard of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Michael Gullard and his wife, Linda, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Robert Gullard and his wife, Betty Jo, of Lake Park, Minnesota, Lyle Gullard of Hitterdal, Minnesota, Barbara Branden and her husband, Norman, of Audubon, Minnesota, Nancy Villiard and her husband, Bob, of Hawley, Minnesota, and Bonnie Korth of Frazee, Minnesota; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Krissy; by his brother David Gullard; and by his sister Marilyn Ratley.
At Mr. Gullard’s request, services will be held in Lake Park with his immediate family attending.

Audrey Shirley Hibbard
Audrey Shirley Hibbard, 84, of Newport Center died on March 28, 2012, in Newport, of natural causes very soon after becoming ill.
She was born on June 1, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a daughter of Everett and Lillian (Malone) Herra.
She had lived with her daughter Linda and son-in-law Chuck in Newport Center since 2007.
Perhaps her greatest joy was being a nanny, “Gig,” for three children, which were Brett, Ashley, and Megan Johnson all of Kingston, Massachusetts, from their birth until her eightieth birthday.
She is survived by her children: George Hibbard of Texas, Linda Traniello of Newport Center, John Hibbard of Massachusetts, and Charlene Brennock of Massachusetts; by her grandchildren: Mark French, Michelle Plumley, Olivia Brennock, Bobby Hibbard, Gloria Hibbard, and Katie Brugulis; by her great-grandchildren: Jacob Thomas and Cole Plumley; and by her sister Barbara Duncanson of California.
A graveside service was held on March 30, at the Newport Center Cemetery.

Frances E. LaBerge
Frances E. LaBerge, 75, of Brownington died on March 27, 2012, in Newport.
She was born on May 16, 1936, in Middlebury, a daughter of William and Lucille (Dorey) Oney. In 1956, she married Robert LaBerge who predeceased her on July 14, 2003.
For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Laberge owned and operated Will-O-Wood Campground in Brownington, where she enjoyed socializing, meeting and greeting many people.
Mrs. LaBerge held membership with the Orleans Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf in the Ladies League. She was also a member of St. Theresa’s Parish in Orleans. She enjoyed camping, knitting, cards, and mahjong. She wintered in Florida where she was a very active person and she loved family parties and the outdoors.
She is survived by her children: Kathy Hickey and her husband, Fred, of Nashua, New Hampshire, Robert LaBerge Jr. and his wife, Sylvie, of Jacksonville, Florida, Richard LaBerge and his wife, Valerie, of Montgomery, Illinois, Sue Yeadon and her husband, Kevin, of South Burlington, Michael LaBerge and his wife, Gina, of Essex, Jeffrey LaBerge and his wife, Cindy, of Brownington, and David LaBerge and his wife, Angel, of Brownington. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Andrew and Ryan Hickey, Jessica and Chad LaBerge, Lesley, Ricky, and Gabrielle LaBerge, Margo and Matthew Yeadon, Cody, Adam and Jordan LaBerge, James and Joshua LaBerge, and Chelsey, Shelly, and Seiara Abbott; by her great-grandchild Peyton Ludwig; by her brothers: Howard Gordon and Dorey Gordon and his wife, Marie; by her sister Barbara Berthiume; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Jean Ladue.

Richard L. LaPoint
Richard L. LaPoint, 82, died on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at North Country Hospital in Newport following a long struggle with cancer.
He was born in Cambridge on August 27, 1929, the son of Melbourne and Elizabeth (King) LaPoint.
Mr. LaPoint attended school in Cambridge and joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.
He married Patricia (Patsy) Pecor on January 15, 1955. They made their home in Fletcher and moved to Craftsbury where they owned and operated a dairy farm until the 1970s. Mr. LaPoint served as the road commissioner for the town of Craftsbury for several years.
He was a 36-year member of the American Legion Post #7 in Hardwick and a member of the National Rifle Associaton. He enjoyed his family, being outdoors, and hunting, especially rabbit hunting with his dogs.
He leaves four sons: Stuart and his wife, Sheila, Clifford and his wife, Karen, Raymond and his wife, Jennifer, all of Craftsbury, and Daniel of LaGrande, Oregon; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Marion Blanchard of Fairfax; and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Patsy who died in June of 2006; and a son, Nathan.
A private family graveside service in Fletcher will be held at their convenience.

Timothy Dean Lowell
Timothy Dean Lowell, 62, of Hardwick died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 29, 2012, in Newport.
He was born in Morrisville on September 3, 1949, the son of Willis and Marion (Baker) Lowell. He attended the Johnsonian School and was a logger most of his life.
Mr. Lowell enjoyed the outdoors, especially being in the woods. He also enjoyed his time with family, especially his grandchildren who were his pride and his joy.
He leaves a son, Timothy Lowell II of Chester; two daughters: Kristie Lowell of Derby and Hollie Darling and her husband, Mark, of Hardwick; three brothers: David Lowell and his wife, Donna, of Marlboro, Massachusetts, Michael Lowell and his wife, Barbara, of Hardwick, and Paul Lowell and his wife, Muriel, of Elmore; and three sisters: Wendy Lowell of Cowansville, Quebec, Wanda Cloutier and her friend, Michael, of Vergennes, and Wanita Moodie and her husband, Leo, of Wolcott and Florida. He also leaves four special grandchildren: Heather Lowell, Dominick and Willow Tanner and Megan Darling; as well as Dale Blake of South Carolina, the mother of his children, and many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 4, at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor Alan Parker officiating at the Malcolm R. Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common, where friends may call on Tuesday, April 3, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Waneta W. Mcrae
Waneta Mary Wagner McRae, 94, of Newport died on March 15, 2012, at Bel-Aire Residence in Newport.
She was born in Island Pond on December 10, 1917, to Charles and Vivian Wagner. On December 29, 1945, she married Donald McRae who predeceased her on February 12, 2011.
Mr. and Mrs. McRae owned their own dairy farm in Island Pond for 50 years. Before farming entered her life, Mrs. McRae was a public school teacher in the towns of West Burke, Concord, Walden and Waterford.
When her children went to college, to help support their education, she returned to teaching while at the same time carrying on the many chores of a farmer. To improve her ability to help her children and to also become a stronger teacher, Mrs. McRae, at the age of 47, returned to Lyndon State College to attain her bachelor’s degree in education. The latter part of her teaching career included teaching in the elementary schools of West Charleston, Canaan, Derby Line and the Derby Junior High School.
She remembered her students with stories of their successes and her times spent with them. She loved her family very much and followed all the activities of her children and grandchildren with great interest.
She is survived by her three children: Martin McRae and his wife, Barbara, of Morgan, Bruce McRae and his wife, Gisele, of Milton, and Vivian Spates and her husband, Douglas, of Derby; by her sister-in-law Raelene Wright and her husband, Dale, of South Ryegate; by her grandchildren: Lia Greenwood and her husband, Chad, Jeff McRae and his wife, Erin McKenny, Andrea Carbine and her husband, Andrew, Elia Marquis and her husband, Corey, Alicia Messier and her husband, Rodney, Kate McRae and Kyle McRae; by her great-grandchildren: Evan, Delia, and Erik Greenwood, McKenna, Cecelia, and Griffin Marquis, Finnegan and Charles McRae, and Poppy Messier; by a special niece, Bonnie Fontaine and her husband, Paul, of St. Johnsbury; as well as by other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Michael McRae; and by her stepsisters: Evelyn Bishop and Madeline Pratt.

Terry Ann Noyes, 57, of Lyndonville died on Friday, March 23, 2012, at home following a short illness.
Born on January 6, 1955, she was the daughter of Merrill R. and Dorothy L. (Pierce) Noyes.
Ms. Noyes was a graduate of Concord High School in Concord and was a longtime resident of Lyndonville. She was employed at Asia Restaurant as manager and hostess for many years.
She enjoyed being at the ocean with her feet in the sand, looking for shells. She enjoyed feeding the birds along with chipmunks and squirrels, and walking.
Survivors include her daughter Brooke L. Noyes; her son Justin A. Halpern; and her grandson Caleb Sanville all of Lyndonville; two brothers: Ronald Noyes of St. Johnsbury, and Dale Noyes of Concord; and a sister, Nancy Landrigan, of Hartford, Connecticut.

James Michael Sullivan PA-C
James “Jim” Michael Sullivan, 68, of Laurinburg, North Carolina, died on Thursday, March 29, 2012, with his wife, Marcia, at his side.
A compassionate person who always put others before himself, even at the end, Mr. Sullivan was more concerned for those around him than himself.
Born on August 14, 1943, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he was the son of the late James Michael Sullivan and Margaret Claire Tracey of Willimantic, Connecticut. He attended St. Joseph’s and Windham High School in Willimantic before joining the United States Navy in 1961. During his enlistment, he served as a fleet United States Marine Corps corpsman in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1967.
After graduation from Dartmouth Medical School in 1972, he went on to serve as Chief of Hematology at the Newington Children’s Hospital in Newington, Connecticut. In 1972, he was commissioned in the United States National Health Corps and spent the next four years working at a satellite medical center in Island Pond. He moved to Maxton, North Carolina, in 1976 and in 1983 he opened his own practice, Shoeheel Medical Arts, and continued to see patients right up to his death. During his 40 years of practice, he enjoyed the nontraditional aspects of patient care such as snowmobile baby deliveries and rural area house calls. Mr. Sullivan served at various times on the hospital staff in both Newport and Laurinburg.
Throughout his life, he was always there for those in need and his presence will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marcia Marquis Sullivan of Laurinburg; by two sons: Sean Collins Sullivan and his wife, Darlene, of Amston, Connecticut and Chris Ryan Sullivan and his wife, Karin, of Washington, D.C.; by his four grandchildren: Shannon, Colin, Madison, and Monica; as well as by cherished family in North Carolina, Connecticut and Vermont.
Funeral services were held on April 1, in Laurinburg.
