Police say passengers in chase were terrified

NEWPORT — Newport City Police Sergeant Nicholas Rivers said he was parked in front of an Orchard Street home known as a drug market around 12:25 p.m. on May 30 when he saw an SUV headed toward him.  In his affidavit Sergeant Rivers said he recognized the driver as 37-year-old Shawn Turnbaugh, an Orleans resident.

The affidavit says Sergeant Rivers knew Mr. Turnbaugh and also knew his license had been suspended.  As Mr. Turnbaugh passed he tried to hide his face and look away, the affidavit says.

Sergeant Rivers said he hit his blue lights and turned around to follow as Mr. Turnbaugh hit the gas and sped away….
