Outstanding warrants lead to more charges

NEWPORT — In an affidavit Newport City Police Detective James LeClair said he was driving on Main Street around 1 p.m. on April 6 when he spotted a familiar face.  It belonged to Christopher Birk, 42, of Derby, who, the affidavit says, had a couple of outstanding warrants.

Detective LeClair said he searched Mr. Birk after arresting him and found several pills in his pocket.  He said Mr. Birk told him they belonged to a woman who was with him and she had asked him to hold on to them for her.  The woman confirmed Mr. Birk’s claim.

Later in the day, the woman called Newport Police and spoke with Detective LeClair…
