GREENSBORO — Evan Karp arrived in Australia to applause. As he and fellow U.S. firefighters stepped off the plane, an Australian fire crew was there to thank them for joining their effort to fight the most catastrophic fire in Australian history. “You went out to get a haircut, to get a beer, and people were like: You’re an American firefighter? It’s on us,” he said.
