NEWPORT — The Newport City Council has never offered an explanation of its decision to fire City Manager Jonathan DeLaBruere at a special meeting held on November 8, 2024. But, just about two months since he lost his job, Mr. DeLaBruere approached the Chronicle to give his account of the events leading up to his dismissal.
Mr. DeLaBruere, who said he is not suing the city over what he still believes was wrongful termination, provided copies of the correspondence he received from Mayor Linda Joy Sullivan, council member Rick Ufford-Chase, and the council as a whole. He also visited the Chronicle office Friday to provide more details about his time as city manager and answer questions.
The first written notice indicating Mr. DeLaBruere’s days as city manager might be numbered came on November 5, 2024, in the form of a short email from Mayor Sullivan that was copied only to council member Rick Ufford-Chase.
It read, “The Council met last night to complete your performance review. …
