Roxie Lyle (Woodward) Beard
Roxie Lyle (Woodward) Beard, 90, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, died in Newport on Monday, January 17, 2011. She joins her husband, Burnell, of 66 years at the big fishing hole in the great beyond.
Mr. and Mrs. Beard knew all the greatest fishing places in Vermont and New Hampshire. Mr. Beard taught her how to fish when she became determined not to become a fisherman’s widow. She won a state championship for landing the largest lake trout. One of the couple’s greatest joys was when they visited their daughter in Island Pond where a tiny guest house accommodated their needs. They towed their old boat to all the nearby lakes and ponds and especially loved the sunsets over Echo Lake. Mrs. Beard also loved quilting and won a blue ribbon at the Orleans County Fair. She made many quilts, which she gave away, donated to nursing homes, or sold. She enjoyed going bottle digging with her sisters and liked playing cards, Scrabble, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She liked baking pies and making jelly. Putting up pickles and berrying were her highlights. She was an avid swimmer up to the last.
She leaves two sons: George Thomas Beard and wife, Louise, of South Sioux City, Nebraska, and his five grown children: Thomas Homer Beard, his wife, Milissa, and their five-year-old son Donald Thomas; also two stepchildren of Gaffney, South Carolina; a daughter, April Hudson, of Island Pond and Waid.
Mrs. Beard was born and brought up in Lebanon where she met her lifelong love, Burnell, a Vermonter. He predeceased her on December 7, 2004. Mrs. Beard moved to South Carolina and lived with her son Tommy for 14 months, enjoying visits to flea markets, car shows, and restaurants. For the last five years, Mrs. Beard has been in the loving care of her only daughter, April Hudson, and Waid in Island Pond.
She leaves April’s daughters, a devoted granddaughter, Tina Stevens, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Lisa Judd; great-granddaughter Mindy Tobin in Columbia, South Carolina; many nieces and nephews; and special friends Penny Palmer and Joyce Coull. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas W. Woodward and Julia A. Bartlett; by brothers Harry of Tennessee and Leon from Lebanon and his band, Woody and the Ramblers. Sisters predeceasing her are Evelyn Parady, a Lebanon antique dealer; Dorothy Woodward, an area seamstress; Georgianna Nugent, a longtime sewer for Carters, and Elaine Quimby, antique bottle collector. She leaves brothers Robert Woodward, living on the family homestead, and Earl, a resident of Genesis Rest Home, both of Lebanon.
