In Newport, Council ends year with a bang

NEWPORT — At its last meeting of the year, the city council got so much business done that the announcement by City Council President Chris Vachon that he does not plan to seek reelection caused only a minor ripple.

Over the course of Monday’s meeting council members voted to start advertising for a new city manager immediately, and also to advertise for someone to take on the newly created job of Newport Administrative Firefighter.  That, despite a job description for the new post has yet to be put together.

The council also heard from recently hired internal grants manager Frank Cheney, who had something of a good-news-bad-news report.  The bad news, he said, is that although Newport has spent $2.1-million …
