Elwin Lee Annis Jr.
Elwin Lee Annis Jr., 49, of Irasburg died suddenly on February 4, 2010, at home.
Mr. Annis was born June 30, 1960, in Newport, a son of Elwin Lee Annis Sr.
He was a pattern designer for Ethan Allen in Orleans for 22 years. He retired in 1997 due to illness.
He enjoyed bowling and fishing, but most of all, he enjoyed playing with his nephews Robert Jr., Francis, Joseph, and Thomas Annis.
He is survived by his brothers: Robert Annis Sr. of Irasburg, Brien Lemois Jr. of Irasburg, and Erik Murray and his fiancée, Alissa Fountaine, of Orleans; by his adopted mother Nancy Lemois of Irasburg; and by his best friend, Raymond Royer, of Orleans. He was predeceased by his father, Elwin Lee Annis Sr.; by his adopted father Brien Lemois Sr.; and by his sister-in-law Barbara Annis.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport. Spring interment will be held at the Irasburg Cemetery.

Gertrude Mary Drown
Gertrude Mary Drown, 93, died at her favorite place, home, on February 2, 2010, with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Drown was born in Holland on February 18, 1916, a daughter of Harry and Mildred (Collins) Hall.
After attending Holland Graded School, she went to live with her aunt and uncle Ken and Thelma Somerville in Newport while she attended Newport High School.
There she met the love of her life, Jersey Drown. After high school graduation she enrolled in the child-care program at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, following which, she was employed on Long Island, New York.
She married Warren “Jersey” Drown on December 10, 1938. Together they made their home in several communities as her husband’s work required. In 1940, they returned to Newport to live at his family homestead for the next 70 years.
First and foremost, she was a truly devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.
Her love of reading led her to be the assistant and later head librarian at the Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport for 13 years.
Later she worked in the library at Sacred Heart Graded School. She enjoyed oil painting as well as collecting and refinishing antique furniture.
She enjoyed many happy times at Lake Salem, particularly when Gram and Gramp Jacobsen arrived from Connecticut and her dear and close nieces and nephews would visit.
She held memberships with the United Church of Newport, the Holland Historical Society, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by her two children, Charles Drown Sr. and his wife, Virginia, of Newport Center and Ruth Richard and her husband, Mike, of Newport; by grandchildren: Charles “Chuck” Drown Jr. and his wife, Sue, of Colorado, Michael Morey and his wife, Shelly, of Newport, Kristen Morey of Newport, and Sara Richard of Burlington; by one great-granddaughter, Jenna Morey; by her siblings: Collins Hall of Irasburg, Mary Lou Wyman of Virginia, and Gilbert Hall of New York; and by many loved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; by her loving husband, Warren “Jersey” Drown; and by siblings Joshua and Alfred Hall.
Funeral services were held February 5 at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck and the Reverend Richard O’Hara officiating. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.

William H. McCarthy
William H. McCarthy, 88, of Derby died peacefully February 5, 2010, in Newport.
Mr. McCarthy was born September 29, 1921, in Bayonne, New Jersey, a son of Jerry and Ellen (Croghan) McCarthy.
On December 18, 1943, he married Dolores Kerman, who predeceased him in 2008.
He entered the United States Navy and served his country during World War II.
He was an electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3.
He moved to Derby about 20 years ago after his retirement in Cranford, New Jersey.
He held membership with St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line, where he was a deacon. He loved hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter Ellen McCarthy of Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey; by his son Bill McCarthy and his wife, Robyn, of Newport; by six grandchildren: Christopher, Elizabeth, Maggie, Catie, Taylor, and Kelsey; by one great-granddaughter, Grace Ellen; by two brothers, Harry McCarthy and his wife, Madeline, of New Jersey and Eddie McCarthy of Connecticut; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by four brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 11, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Michael Reardon celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial.
