NEWPORT CENTER — A local man with a flying machine appeared before the select board on June 5 and asked it to approve a private airstrip. The mini-airport would only serve the petitioner’s personal needs, but the official designation could provide some benefit to the surrounding community. Pilot Leonardo Silvestri explained the process for establishing a runway to the board and took the first step toward getting his project off the ground.
Mr. Silvestri came prepared to answer any question the board members had about designating the airstrip. He said he wants to be able to land and take off in a field on his property off Cross Road. That field is near other open fields in which corn is sometimes grown.
