Mayoral candidate presents a vision for city

NEWPORT — Although Rick Ufford-Chase is the only candidate whose name will appear next to the mayor’s check box on Newport’s ballot on March 4, he’s not taking his election for granted.

In laying out his view of what work the person who is elected at this year’s Annual Meeting will have to do, Mr. Ufford-Chase only was willing to say, “If I am elected.”

Given the unusual currents of Newport politics, his caution is not surprising.  There have been suggestions that some may launch a write-in campaign for current mayor Linda Joy Sullivan even though she announced in January that she does not intend to seek a second term, and took no steps to put her name forward as a candidate.
