Everett Bruce Bailey Sr.
Everett Bruce Bailey Sr., 80, of Groveton, New Hampshire, died peacefully on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, New Hampshire, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Bailey was born December 25, 1929, in Derby, a son of Walter and Marjorie (Phillips) Bailey. He was a 1948 graduate of North Troy High School.
He lived in Lancaster, New Hampshire, for several years before moving to Groveton in 1974.
He was a member of Orleans Masons Lodge 55 in Barton for 55-plus years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snow machining, ice fishing, four-wheeling, and boating as well as cars, Mack trucks, and construction.
He worked as a mechanic from 1967 to 1980 and used to build and own stock cars. He was a member of Winlock Camp, and he loved cats.
He was a heavy equipment operator, owning and operating Everett Bailey Construction for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Avis M. (Barber) Bailey, of Groveton; by two sons, Everett Bailey Jr. and his wife, Diane, of West Winfield, New York, and David Bailey of Burlington; by three stepsons: Jack Barber and his wife, Marie, of Orange Park, Florida, Wayne Leno of Maryland and John Leno and his wife, Kathy, of Dalton, New Hampshire; by daughter-in-law Lori Bailey of Groveton; by brother Phillip Bailey and his wife, Corrine, of Glover; by sister Marjorie Anderson of Culpeper, Virginia; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; by his son Alan Bailey; by his daughter Betty Bailey; and by his brother Clair Bailey.
Funeral services were held January 25 at Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton with Pastor Aaron Cox of the Groveton United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in the Ridgewell Cemetery in Guildhall.

George E. Bonneau
George E. Bonneau, 85, of Newport died suddenly January 22, 2010, in Newport.
Mr. Bonneau was born January 31, 1924, in St. Ignace de Standbridge, Quebec, a son of Oliva and Bernadette (Boucher) Bonneau.
On October 14, 1952, he married Marie-Paule Leclerc, who survives him.
He farmed for 23 years in Newport Center, and he was a self-employed carpenter.
He was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport, and was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2285.
His hobbies included making birdhouses and bird feeders, working on puzzles, and playing cards with his family. He was a member of the North Country Swingers.
He is survived by his wife, Marie-Paule Bonneau, of Newport; by three children: Richard Bonneau and his wife, Marie, of Newport, Patricia Bonneau of Arlington, Virginia, and Carmen Vincent and her husband, Steven, of Newport; by three grandchildren: Daniel Bonneau and his wife, Ashley, of California, Chantal Bonneau of Burlington, and Elizabeth Vincent of Saco, Maine; by his siblings: Bernard Bonneau and his wife, Marie-Blanche, of Marieville, Quebec, Gerald Bonneau and his wife, Marie-Ange, of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Jacque Bonneau and his wife, Francine, of Farnham, Quebec, Francoise Robillard of Iberville, Quebec, Gisele Dupuis of Brassard, Quebec, Estelle Deslongchamps of Brassard, and Jeannine Maher of Montreal, Quebec; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Rosaire Bonneau and his wife, Flore, and Edeas Bonneau and his wife, Viola; and by brothers-in-law: Floribert Robbilard, Claude Deslongchamps, and Real Dupuis.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 29, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport in the spring with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newport.

Marjorie A. Davis
Marjorie A. Davis, 103, of Derby died peacefully January 25, 2010, in Derby.
Mrs. Davis was born September 4, 1906, in Charleston, a daughter of Wilson and L. Adaline (Hudson) Hinton.
On February 20, 1937, she married William E. Davis, who predeceased her in 1964.
She went to business school, beautician school, and Vermont College. She held several jobs including pastry chef, teacher, cook, and bank clerk.
She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was known as “Grammie” to everyone. She loved to embroider and recite poetry. She was always ready to give a helping hand to anyone who could use it. She was very family driven and always enjoyed having her family around.
She is survived by her children: Nancy Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, of Rutland, Norman Davis and his wife, Barbara, of Florida, and Carol Wright and her husband, Walter, of Derby; by her ten grandchildren; by 14 great-grandchildren; by one niece; and by two nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Lois Ramdell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 29, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Dan Pierce officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the funeral on Friday. Spring interment will be held in Hillside Cemetery in East Charleston.

Bernadette G. Ewens
Bernadette G. Ewens, 88, died in Barton on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, after a long illness.
Mrs. Ewens was born March 26, 1921, in Sherbooke, Quebec, a daughter of Lawrence and Gertrude (Hayden) Greenland.
She spent many years keeping a lovely home for her husbands, George Goulet and Robert Ewens, who both predeceased her.
Her greatest pleasure in life was playing golf, and she was a member of the Orleans Country Club for many years.
She is survived by her brother Lawrence Greenland of Sherbrooke; by two sisters, Barbara Dion and her husband, Claude, of Lennoxville, Quebec, and Theresa Wilkins and her husband Harley of Sherbrooke; and by several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held in the spring.

Leonard Allen Lucas
Leonard Lucas at 60.Leonard Allen Lucas, 71, of Newport died January 19, 2010, in Newport, following a long illness.
Mr. Lucas was born June 9, 1938, in Derby, a son of Kenneth and Rose (Conn) Lucas.
On May 16, 1959, he married Cecile Wood, who survives him.
He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1956. He was employed as a machinist at Union Butterfield’s in Derby Line. He retired in 1989.
He was a member of the Newport City Zoning Board for a number of years.
He enjoyed working in his yard, displaying many outdoor Christmas lights, playing cards (especially hearts), being with his family, and driving and cleaning his truck.
He is survived by his wife, Cecile Lucas, of Newport; by three children: Terry Lucas and his wife, Sue, of Seattle, Washington, Sherry Walker and her husband, Reinhard, of Derby and Judy Lucas and Michael Mead of Derby; by seven grandchildren: Greg and Rachel Lucas, Neil Walker, Amanda Leget, and April, Ashley and Samantha Mead; by five great-grandchildren: Dayana and Breyniah Leget, Caden Lucas Walker, and Madison and Morgan Davio; by three brothers: Albert Lucas and his wife, Sylvia, of Newport, Earl Lucas and his wife, Jackie, of Florida, and Percy Lucas and his wife, Linda, of Newport; and by several nieces, nephews, and uncles. He was predeceased by two sisters, Pearl Favreau and Shirley Lucas.
Funeral services were held January 23 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend David Lisner officiating. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Germaine (Champigny) Moeykens
Germaine (Champigny) Moeykens, 98, of Newport died January 25, 2010, at Newport.
Mrs. Moeykens was born April 11, 1911, in Kingsbury, Quebec, a daughter of Calixte and Exilper (Labonte) Champigny.
Mrs. Moeykens immigrated to Vermont at age five from Canada and was proud to become a U.S. citizen in 1963. She was lovingly known as “Mama” to her children and “Mémère” to her grandchildren.
She was a longstanding member of the Ladies of Saint Anne and a faithful member of the congregation at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport.
She and her husband, Julius, raised 13 children, and she was a wonderful cook, baker, and homemaker. She enjoyed picking wild berries and apples and baking pies and bread well into her nineties. She loved being in the woods at hunting camp in Morgan, and she devoted “leisure” time to doing things for others and in prayer. She was adept at many of the arts of country living, including vegetable gardening, canning, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and making soap, jams, pickles, and even wine. She made many of the clothes her children grew up wearing, and taught all of her offspring the importance of making use of everything, being a role model for conservation all of her life.
With the help of her family, she was able to live in her own home until she was nearly 98 years old.
She is survived by three sisters: Laura Ida Marineau of Montpelier, Juliette Boisvert of Newport, and Anita Folsom of Brownington. She was predeceased by her husband, Julius Robert Moeykens, in 1972; by her sons Norbert Edmond Moeykens in 1967 and Paul August Moeykens in 1992; by two grandchildren, Timothy Joseph Conroy in 1969 and Heather Lynn Moeykens in 1972; by her daughter-in-law Eleanor Moeykens in 2007; by siblings: Wilfrid Champigny, Lillian Brien, Rosa Nadeau, Camille Champigny, Lena Jacques, Marie Champigny, and Pauline Champigny; by five brothers-in-law; by a sister-in-law; and by several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church on Saturday, January 30, at 11 a.m. Calling hours will take place on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport.

Gertrude May Place, 82, of Westfield died peacefully January 18, 2010, in Newport.
Mrs. Place was born March 15, 1927, in Westfield, a daughter of Glenis and Harriet (Augusta) Goulding.
She married Lawrence Randall, who predeceased her in 1952. She then married Winniford Place, who predeceased her in 1987.
She was a life member of the American Legion Jay Peak Post 28 Auxiliary and the Washington County 40&8 Club.
She is survived by her children: Charles Randall and his wife, Cecile, of Coventry, Jerry Randall and his wife, Barbara, of Jay, Ralph Randall and his wife, Marilyn, of Troy, Michael Randall Sr. and his wife, Anne Marie, of Derby, Evelyn Adams and her husband, Paul, of Milford, New Hampshire, Marion Arel and her husband, Gerard, of Torrington, Connecticut, Marie Randall and her partner, John Beliveau, of Westfield, Yvonne Hinton and her husband, Paul, of Coventry, and Darlene Aiken and her husband, Roger, of Newport Center; by her step daughters: Debbie Gleason and her husband, Arnold, Dianne Round and her husband, Ted, and Karleen Place, all of Vermont; by 29 grandchildren; by 27 great-grandchildren; by two sisters, Polly Gibeault of Westfield and Bessie Brown of Derby; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother John Goulding.

Susan E. Staples
Susan E. Staples, 59, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, died suddenly January 17, 2010, in Portsmouth.
Mrs. Staples was born February 8, 1950, in Newport, a daughter of Howard and Irene (Hand) Major.
She was a lifelong supporter and volunteer of the American Red Cross, including the Northern Vermont Chapter. For the past three years she has held a position with AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America at the American Red Cross, Great Bay Chapter, in Portsmouth. She was a member of the Newport Ambulance Service for many years.
She had a passion for arts and crafts such as quilting, scrapbooking, jewelry making, and picture taking of her family. She had many loving friends.
She is survived by her loving sister Kimberly Major of Newport; by her four children: Scott Martin and his wife, Penny, of Derby, Judy Crowley of Maine, Matthew Martin and his girlfriend, Amy Descheneau, of Derby, and William Martin of Derby Line; and by 13 grandchildren: Gregory, Rodney Jr., Macy, Christopher, Anthony, Abagale, Mickayla, Kody, Brittany, Olivia, Micheal, Kyle, and Dylan. She was predeceased by her parents; and by her brother William James Major.
Funeral services were held January 22 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.

Robert P. Wells
Robert P. Wells, 89, a longtime resident of Craftsbury, died at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction on Saturday, January 23, 2010, with his daughter Roberta and her husband, Gary, by his side.
Mr. Wells was born in Craftsbury on September 28, 1920, a son of Peter Wells and Matilda Brow Wells Bibby. He attended school in Craftsbury and moved to Connecticut in the early 1940s, where he worked many years as a salesman for Stanley Tool Company.
He married his wife, Caroline Church, on March 10, 1943, in New Britian, Connecticut, where they made their home until the late 1960s when they moved to his home of Craftsbury.
He was elected judge of probate for Orleans County in 1978 and served until his retirement. He had served as a side judge for Orleans Country from 1975 until his election in 1978 and was a former justice of the peace and member of the state Republican Committee.
He was a proud Vermonter. He led a very accomplished life for having only completed tenth grade.
He was a member of Meridian Sun Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Craftsbury. He enjoyed a good game of golf and spending time with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandson.
He is survived by his daughter Roberta Hodgdon and her husband, Gary, of White River Junction; by his grandson Daniel Hodgdon of Brighton, Massachusetts; and by extended family members. He was predeceased by his wife in February 2004; by his brother Cecil Howard “Pep” Wells; and by sisters Della and Mildred Wells.
A funeral service will be held Friday, January 29, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Craftsbury with the Reverend Alan Parker officiating. The service will include Masonic prayers by Meridian Sun Lodge members. Spring interment will be in the Craftsbury Village Cemetery.
