NEWPORT — For many in the Kingdom, transportation marks the difference between having needs met, or not. In September, the nonprofit organization Rural Community Transportation (RCT) launched a new attempt at bridging that gap in RCT Rides — a program designed to function like a taxi service, but for free.
RCT provides transportation across Orleans, Essex, Caledonia, and Lamoille counties, about 24 percent of the state. Prior to RCT Rides, the organization accomplished this along three fixed bus routes and through “demand-response” rides, which require scheduling 48 hours in advance, and are funded by different state and community programs like Older Adults and Persons with Disabilities (O&D) and Rides to Recovery and Job Access. With this new micro-transit service available in Newport and Lamoille County, the organization seeks to meet individuals’ needs as they arise.
