NEWPORT —Judge Rory Thibault released Shoaib Mahmood, 41, of Watervliet, New York, on conditions after he pled innocent to a felony charge of negligent driving while eluding a law enforcement officer, careless or negligent driving, excessive speed, and reckless endangerment.
Newport City Police Patrolman Jonathan Morin’s affidavit says around 2:39 a.m. on December 4, 2024, a radio call said the Border Patrol was trying to stop a car on Route 111 in Derby.
Patrolman Morin said he had just reached Main Street in Derby Center when he saw a red Kia go through a stop sign at Route 111 and Main Street at around 35 miles an hour, then make a hard left and a right onto West Street. He said the Kia was traveling faster than the speed limit.
According to his affidavit, the car was traveling above 25 miles an hour as it took the speed bumps on West Street. Then, Patrolman Morin said, it turned left onto Route 5 without halting for a stop sign. …
