Plea deal in Deslandes case

NEWPORT—A jury was already selected when lawyers for Katelyn Deslandes, 25, of Island Pond, and prosecutors reached a plea agreement.   Ms. Deslandes had faced felony charges of grossly negligent driving with death resulting stemming from the collision that took the lives of Logan Costa of Charleston and Taylor Warren of Lunenberg.  Both were 18 years old.

The deal calls for Ms. Deslandes to plead guilty to reduced charges of negligent driving with death resulting.  Sentencing is to be decided at a hearing at which the amount of jail time asked by the state will be capped at two to four years.  That is a one-to-two year sentence for each of the charges, to be served consecutively.

Ms. Deslandes will be free to argue for “any lawful sentence.”  The agreement also comes with the provision that the state will not be allowed to present evidence that Ms. Deslandes was impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident….
