Ronald Earle Barry
Ronald Earle Barry, 81, of Derby Line and formerly of Arlington, Massachusetts, died on February 17, 2014, in Newport, surrounded by family, following a brief illness.
He was born on January 27, 1933, in Arlington, a son of Joseph Michael and Ruth Ester (Woodward) Barry.
On October 6, 1956, he married Joan Ellyn (Carlson), who predeceased him in 2009.
Mr. Barry moved to Newport in 1998 with his wife, to retire, after spending the majority of his life in Arlington. They were greeted warmly, meeting kind neighbors and making many new friends. They enjoyed a quiet, relaxing life for several years, which included daily breakfast at The Brown Cow and The East Side restaurants. After his wife died, he became a resident of Michaud Manor and quickly bonded with Michaud staff and was helpful to the other residents. However, it was evident to those who knew him closest that the loss of his wife had a significant effect on his overall happiness and well-being.
Mr. Barry had a deep love for music and had an extensive record collection. He had a particular fondness for 1950s singer Joni James. When you visited with him, music would always be playing and he would love to share stories of the various artists he was listening to.
For many years, his home was a gathering place for many weekend cookouts and parties and music was always a centerpiece of these gatherings. Along with his wife and his two boys, music was his life!
He was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, having served in Ethiopia for the Army during the Korean War. Most of his working career was spent helping out the family business, which was a popular grocery, produce, and meat market in Arlington. In later years, he worked as a case manager for Minuteman Home Care, where he provided in-home care and services for elderly residents in his community. He also worked several years for the Leahy Clinic, where he retired in 1998.
He is survived locally by his two children: Raymond Barry of Newport and Craig Barry and his wife, Kristi, of Newport; a granddaughter, Madison Barry, his “princess,” of Newport; his in-laws: Bill and Bonnie Wheeler of Derby Line, and sister-in-law Merrilyn Barry of Derby; his niece Kimberly Barry and her husband, Keith, of Troy; and by his nephews: Kyle Barry and his wife, Gail, of Derby, and Kord Barry and his wife, Mary, of Derby.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Elwyn Lester Brown
Elwyn Lester Brown, 93, of Newport Center died peacefully on February 17, 2014, in Newport.
He was born on July 15, 1920, in Newport, to Warren and Hazel (Percy) Brown.
On September 28, 1945, he married Hazel Dow, who predeceased him on June 4, 2006.
Mr. Brown was a lineman for the New England Telephone Company, where he retired in 1976. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force, where he was a veteran of World War II.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, canning, gardening, playing cribbage and cards. He also sold vegetables and furniture on his lawn and he enjoyed rototilling and maple sugaring.
He was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge #16 of Troy, the American Legion Post #21 of Newport, and the telephone pioneers.
He is survived by his sons: Glen Brown and his wife, Arlene, of Newport Center, and Fred Brown and his wife, Sheryl, of Newport Center; his grandchildren: Glen W. Brown and his wife, Tammy Szych, of Derby, and Sharon Eustace and her husband, Dillon, of St. Johnsbury; three great-grandchildren: Brandon and Brooklyn Brown and Myah Eustace; and by a dear friend, Dorothy Bouton, of Middlebury.
Funeral services were held on February 22, in Newport. Spring interment will be in Newport Center Cemetery.

Madeleine M. Degreenia
Madeleine M. Degreenia, 88, of Newport died on February 18, 2014, in Newport.
She was born on January 24, 1926, in Irasburg, to Oscar and Georgette (Gaboriault) Fournier.
On October 25, 1950, she married H.E. Degrennia, who survives her.
She and her husband traveled extensively with his employment and they also traveled around the United States in their motor homes.
She is survived by her husband H.E. Degreenia of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her siblings: Adrien, Joe and Lucien Fournier, and Yvonne Hoyt, Pauline Roy and Lucille Keefe.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Thursday, February 27, at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea in Newport, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Spring interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Elena Coletti Howe
Elena Coletti Howe, a longtime resident of Newport, died peacefully on February 15, 2014, at her home in Newport. She was 92 years old and the beloved wife for 62 years of the late Dr. Paul Howe.
She was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on February 18, 1921, a daughter of Angelina and Donato Coletti of St. Donato, Italy. The story of her parents’ life in Italy, and her father’s artistic gifts, prompted her and her husband to travel to this small Italian village to meet friends and relatives of her parents. Many fine examples of her father’s sculptures, artwork and reliefs are on display in museums and public buildings throughout the United States and Italy.
She married Dr. Paul Howe on April 28, 1946, and spent many years working in his office as secretary and bookkeeper. They traveled extensively throughout Europe, enjoying skiing, golfing and visiting friends. After Dr. Howe’s retirement, they divided their time between a winter home in Fort Myers, Florida, and Newport. They always looked forward to returning to the Newport Country Club to resume golf and reunite with friends.
She is survived by her two sons: Dr. James G. Howe and Gregory P. Howe and his wife, Billie. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Emily Howe of Notre Dame, Indiana, Lindsay Howe of Boston, Massachusetts, Tanner Howe and his wife, Hillery, and their children, Chloe and Doon, of Brooklyn, New York, Justin Howe and his wife, Caroline, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Julia Howe Sullivan and her husband, Trevor, of Burlington, and Andrew Howe of Shelburne.
She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Paul Howe; her sisters: Evelyn Fitzgerald, Loretta Filder, and Carmela Fitzgerald; a brother, Dr. Rudolph Coletti; and by her daughter-in-law Rita Howe.
There will be a private family Catholic service to celebrate her life.

Dorothy Bell Lindsley Mitchell
Dorothy Bell Lindsley Mitchell, 100, of Merritt Island, Florida, died on Saturday, February 8, 2014.
She was born on December 19, 1913, to Hugh Bell and Grace (Twombly) Bell in Derby Line, in a house that was located half in the United States and half in Canada.
On August 18, 1934, she married Donald Lindsley. Together they raised their family in Newport, until he died suddenly on September 1, 1958.
She was active in her children’s lives and in the community. She was an excellent pianist and played for the Kiwanis Club, church youth groups, dance recitals, and the Girl Scouts.
In 1968, she married John Mitchell of Barre, where they resided until his death in 1973.
Moving to Florida in 1979, she became an active member in the Grace United Methodist Church.
She was a lifetime member of The Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of several women’s groups and garden clubs. She loved bridge, music, dancing, reading and playing the piano.
She is survived by her loving children: Donald Lindsley and his wife, Eugenia, Diana Diamantas, Deborah Twiss, and Doreen and her husband, Earl Mahoney; her dear stepdaughter Betty Jean Baker; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister-in-law Gayla Rivard; her brother-in-law Russ Perkins; as well as by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Grace; her brother Sid Bell; her sisters: Margaret Perlman and Gwen Perkins; and by her son-in-law Bill Diamantas.
A graveside memorial service will be held this summer in Newport, where she will be laid to rest in the family plot at Pine Grove Cemetery.
George Bixby Niles
George Bixby Niles, 86, of Newport Center died peacefully on February 17, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on April 25, 1927, in Newport Center, to Harry O. Niles Sr. and June (Morrill) Niles.
On October 9, 1948, he married Lorraine Davio.
He was employed by Tivoly USA in Derby Line for many years. In his earlier years, he worked with his dad on the family farm on Niles Road in Newport Center, until his marriage in 1948.
His hobbies included hunting, tinkering around the house, walking, following wrestling, and playing guitar.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine Niles of Newport Center; his sons: Douglas Niles of Newport Center, Raymond Niles and his wife, Edna, of Littleton, New Hampshire, Timothy Niles of Newport Center, and Kevin Niles and his wife, Julie, of Lockport, New York; his grandchildren: Tammi Lantagne and her husband, Reg, of Newport Center, Tara Selby and her husband, Sean, of Morgan, Shane Niles of Randolph, Dana Niles and his wife, Nancy, of Walpole, Massachusetts, Timothy Niles Jr. of Maine, Darcel Niles and Yolande Niles both of Maine, Kate Schwanke and her husband, Matt, of Ocala, Florida, Bryce Niles and his wife, Tabi, of Eden, Jordan Niles, and Mitchel Niles of Lockport; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother Harry Niles Jr. of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and by his special friend, Sasha.
He was predeceased by three brothers: Avery, Gardner, and Robert Niles; and by his sister Barbara Hosley.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at the Advent Christian Church in Newport Center.

Patricia A. Stevens
Patricia A. Stevens, 77, of Coventry died on February 15, 2014, in Newport.
She was born on February 9, 1937, in Newport, to Evarest and Thelma (Stratton) Cote.
She graduated from Newport High School in the Class of 1957.
On September 7, 1957, she married Roy Stevens, who survives her.
She and her husband, Roy, own Blue Ribbon Carpet Cleaners and she formerly cleaned homes in the area.
Her interests were bowling, dancing and she loved all cats, dogs and horses.
She is survived by her husband Roy Stevens of Coventry; her children: Greg Stevens and his wife, Kathy, of Enosburg, Alan Stevens of Spencer, Massachusetts, and Lori Stevens of North Concord; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandsons; and by four step-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her daughter Valarie Dawn; and by her brother Dean Cote.
A graveside service will be held in the spring.

Celine Florianne Weed
Celine Florianne Weed, 73, of Newport died on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at her home, in the presence of her family, after her fight against cancer.
She was born on June 5, 1940, in Montreal, Quebec.
She was a bartender and waitress at the VFW Post #798 of Newport for several years.
She always worked hard whether it was at a factory, waitressing, or bartending.
She liked to play darts, cards and bingo. She looked forward to cribbage on Tuesday nights at the American Legion Post #21. She loved Halloween as it was her favorite holiday. She is well known for having some kind of crazy costume on and going around giving out candy.
Ms. Weed loved her cats as she was a huge cat lover and she enjoyed taking pictures — anyone who knew her also knew her camera wasn’t far.
She is survived by her daughter Laurie Eastman and her husband, David, of Newport; her son John Weed of Newport; her grandsons: Zachery Lyonnais of Newport, and Sabastian Lyonnais and his fiancée, Amanda Royer, of Orleans; and by her step-grandson Zacheria Eastman of Portland, Maine.
In August of 2013, a “celebration of life” was held for her at the VFW Post #798 in Newport. This is how she would want to be remembered, so there will be no services.
