ORLEANS — On February 4, Shawn Straffin of New Kingdom Properties, LLC, rescinded his offer on the Orleans Industrial Park property he wanted for a housing development. His decision came after several weeks of intense pushback from Orleans Village residents and business owners — particularly Kimball Johnson, owner of the Kimtek Corporation located in the industrial park.
Mr. Straffin announced plans to buy 29 acres of the industrial park from the Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA), which established and owns several such areas around the Kingdom, and put as many as 80 manufactured homes on the site. Opposition to the proposal manifested itself at a January 29 meeting Mr. Straffin called to explain his plan.
Many Orleans residents showed up to express objections to the development. Those included concerns about the type of people who would move into the area, traffic flow into and out of the park, the suitability of the terrain for its proposed use, and worries that by using the property for housing, commercial development in the village would be stymied. …
