ORLEANS — On January 29, Orleans Village residents gathered at the municipal building to hear about the proposed redevelopment of the Orleans Industrial Park. An anonymous flyer posted on social media ahead of time, invited individuals to attend and voice their opposition to the project. The information session was led by the proposed project’s developer, Shawn Straffin, at its end opponents of the plan seemed resolute in their disapproval of the affordable housing project and willingness to challenge its progress.
Mr. Straffin — founder and owner of New Kingdom Properties, LLC — began by laying out the town of Barton zoning bylaw relevant to the project. It says it exists to “provide for orderly community growth.” One permitted use for the 29-acre industrial park property is as a site for a planned unit development (PUD). Mr. Straffin said a manufactured housing community falls under this category and would be a permitted use.
Just minutes into his presentation, Mr. Straffin was interrupted by an Orleans resident who disputed this project ….
