Housing plan stirs controversy In Orleans

ORLEANS — At 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, Orleans Village residents and business owners will gather at the Orleans Memorial Building for an information session about a proposed residential development at the Orleans Industrial Park.  A flyer circulating on Facebook asks individuals who oppose the project to attend as well, although it mistakenly gives the location as the Barton Memorial Building.

Developer Shawn Straffin of New Kingdom Properties, LLC, and David Snedeker, executive director of the Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA), will be present to discuss their involvement with the project and field questions.

The Orleans Industrial Park is one of several owned by NVDA across the Northeast Kingdom, including locations in St. Johnsbury, Lyndonville, and Hardwick.  According to Mr. Snedeker, the property — located in the town of Barton — has been on and off the real estate market for 20 years.  In that time there’s been no significant interest in the property beyond that of solar developers, whose projects were all stunted due to a lack of support from Orleans Village Electric.

Part of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers’ (VAST) trail network crosses through the land, though Mr. Snedeker mentioned this was never formally agreed upon.  “We just let it happen,” he said. …
