Hinterland Market hides in South Albany

SOUTH ALBANY — Out along the dirt roads of South Albany, through fields and forest, and just down one end of Hartwell Pond, is one of the Northeast Kingdom’s best-kept secrets of international cuisine:  The Hinterland Market.

Unbeknownst to even many locals, this small country store first opened as the pandemic project of Karen Weiner and her husband, Aaron Malys, who live in the rooms in the back.  Ms. Weiner and Mr. Malys are both artists who first came to Vermont from New York. They now winter in Montpelier and summer in South Albany.  They purchased their building about six years ago, moving into the rooms in the back, one of which is a large open space that used to be the neighborhood dance hall….
