DERBY — The select board here signed a contract with Newport Ambulance at their regular meeting Monday. According to board Chair Grant Spates, the decision to cut longstanding ties with Derby Line Ambulance was due to its particular situation, but is also a symptom of a wider problem.

He said Derby will host a meeting of Orleans County service providers and municipalities at 9 a.m. on Monday, February 12, to discuss how residents of the area can be sure an ambulance will arrive when called.

Their decision to move away from Derby Line Ambulance was a reaction to both the emergency service’s recent financial problems and the organization’s apparent dissolution.

Mr. Spates read a resignation letter signed by three of Derby Line Ambulance’s four board members.
