Chief Harlamert calls it a day

NEWPORT—If the Newport City Fire Department is toned out Saturday, Chief John Harlamert will, for the first time in 35 years, be able to roll over and go back to sleep.

Chief Harlamert told Interim City Manager Karen Geraghty he is retiring from the department as of September and also resigning from the slew of city offices he holds.  They include building inspector, health inspector, emergency management coordinator, and E-911 coordinator.

He said in an interview Friday morning, that he is also going to leave his seat on the city’s planning commission.
