NEWPORT — A married couple pled guilty to felony charges of first-degree arson and insurance fraud in a case that dates back to 2019.
Judge Rory Thibault deferred sentencing for three years, meaning that if Teresa Guay, 60, and Roger Guay, 63, are not charged with a crime in that time, the charges will be cleared from their records.
Vermont State Police Detective Sergeant Matthew Hill filed an affidavit in the case that said he was told of a structure fire in Orleans on November 20, 2019. The insurance company investigator who told him about the blaze said it happened three days before.
The investigator said Ms. and Mr. Guay had purposely set the fire and had confessed to doing so.
On November 22, 2019, Sergeant Hill and Assistant Fire Marshall Tim Angell spoke with Mr. Guay who told them he was bleeding the furnace and got kerosene on the floor…
