It may be cold, with ice and snow, but spring made an appearance on Saturday, February 24, when the Community Seed Exchange (CSE) at the Barton Public Library opened its doors for the 2018 gardening season. Members of the CSE were there to talk with prospective members about starting and saving seeds, planning a garden, and many other topics. Interested participants also had a chance to talk about topics from beekeeping and pollinator gardens to restoring old apple trees and grafting. Students from Sterling College provided working hands as they sorted and labeled seeds for the CSE. There are a variety of seeds to choose from, including generous donations from High Mowing Seeds and other seed companies, as well as seeds that are donated by local seed savers.
The Community Seed Exchange is a free and public service of the Barton Public Library. Residents of the Northeast Kingdom can come any time the Barton library is open to sign up and check out free seeds. The library hours are Monday from 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 7 p.m., Friday from 1 to 7 p.m., and Saturday mornings in the summer.
