NEWPORT — Looking through the narrow window of 11 hours spent with the Newport City Police Department this reporter could see a policeman’s job, at least in a rural city, bears little resemblance to what one might see on television.

Instead of a frantic paced search for unknown criminals, Newport’s officers appear to act in a measured way as they deal with situations involving people they know fairly well.

When Chief Travis Bingham spoke at a city meeting last month and invited everyone to go for a ride-along with members of his force, I jumped at the chance.  I’ve been writing about police in the city for years, but have had only a passing acquaintance with the actual people behind the stories.
