She attended Sacred Heart High School in Newport, and studied piano under the tutorship of Sister Edmund of Jesus.  She was awarded her Laureate from the Montreal Music Conservatory.  She was invited to compete for the Miss America contest in Vermont, but was declined by her parents for religious reasons.

She performed her music with her group and singly in several states, including New York and Los Angeles, California, where she was considered a budding star as a solo jazz pianist and vocalist.  Her jazz trio was famed on Cape Cod for five years.  She was a world-class musician, having performed at private occasions for many notables, including President John F. Kennedy and the king of Saudi Arabia.  She also performed for a wedding at the Vatican in Rome, Italy.  She performed for several community occasions in Bay County, Florida, including concerts in Downtown Park and at the Martin Theatre.  She, as a volunteer, formed and then directed the choir at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Panama City, Florida, for 25 years.

A. Michael Richard

 A. Michael Richard, 71, of Newport died on Sunday, September 2, 2012, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Ruth Drown Richard.  They would have celebrated their thirty-sixth anniversary in November.

Mr. Richard was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, on December 19, 1940, the son of the late Henry and Helen (McInnis) Richard, also of Nashua.  He attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School, Nashua High School (1958), St. Anselm College (1962, bachelor of arts in history), and Fitchburg State College (1974, master of arts in educational administration).

Immediately after his graduation from St. Anselm, he joined the Navy and served his country proudly as a Lieutenant JG on the USS Kretchmer 329 during the Vietnam War.  He worked 14 years as a junior high history teacher in Nashua until 1980, followed by a position as teaching principal in Coventry.  He served as a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officer for 28 years prior to his retirement in 2006, and until very recently worked at Green Mountain Electric.

His lifelong love of government and the political process led to a term on the Nashua Board of Aldermen at the age of 29 and two years later he ran for mayor.  He was an impassioned advocate for employee rights and fairness in the workplace.  Early in his educational career, he was a member of the Nashua Teacher’s Union, serving on the first negotiating team to successfully attain a collective bargaining agreement, a framework still used today.  He continued his civic involvement in Newport City where he served on the zoning board for 12 years and was chairman of the school board for several years.  He was instrumental in the consolidation of Newport’s east and west side elementary schools.  He loved talking about politics with everyone, and was always ready for a good debate.  MSNBC will definitely notice a decline in its ratings with the loss of Mr. Richard.

He was never afraid to take on new and difficult challenges and did so throughout his life as restaurant proprietor, Triple R Remodeling, real estate sales, purchase and restoration of homes, and he established Richmond Hill Bed and Breakfast and Lake Road Perennials.

However, above all of his educational- and work-related accomplishments, it was his home and family in Newport that gave him the greatest sense of love, joy, and satisfaction.  He will be remembered for his caring ways, his willingness to listen and offer “free” advice, his fairness and patience, and his quick wit and dry humor.

He was predeceased by his mother and father; two sisters:  Louise Richard Smith and Margaret Richard Maffee; two brothers-in-law:  Jack Smith and Donald Maffee; and by his in-laws Jersey and Gertrude Drown.

He is survived by his wife Ruth; his son Michael Morey and his wife, Shelly; his dear granddaughter Jenna of Newport; his daughter Kristen Morey and Will Kulakowski of Newport; and by daughter Sara Richard and Cameron Cook of Burlington.  Additional family survivors include his special aunt, Phemie (Euphemia) Richard of Nashua; a sister, Elizabeth Richard Burpee, and her husband, Dick, of Milford, New Hampshire; two brothers:  John Richard and his wife, Susan, and Louis Richard and his wife, Nancy, all of Nashua; his brother-in-law Charlie Drown and his wife, Ginny, of Newport Center; his nieces and nephews:  Jonathan, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Keith, Caryn, Laura, Gregory, David, Danny and Chuck; and by many very special cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on September 8 in Nashua.  A private burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in honor of Mike Richard to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, California 90266; or to an organization of one’s choice.

Alison Theodore Stoddard

Alison Theodore Stoddard, 87, a World War II veteran, died on Sunday, September 9, 2012, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville, following a brief illness.

He had been a resident of Craftsbury for the past eight years, living at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Richard Morrison.

Duane I. Wilson

Duane I. Wilson died on November 18, 2011, at home with his wife, Ellen, in Laguna Woods, California.

He was born on November 9, 1920, in Westmore, the youngest son of Isaac Allen Wilson and Ina Elizabeth (Hinton) Wilson.  He spent his early years in Island Pond and Hartford, Connecticut.  He graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1937 and from Trinity College in 1949, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in general science.

Mr. Wilson served in World War II in the U.S. Army’s 156th Battalion from 1942 to 1943.  He married Helen Henrickson of Granby, Connecticut, in April of 1943 and their beloved son, Keith, was born in March of 1949.

He began his early career in management with the Roerig division of Charles Pfizer in Boston, Massachusetts, and Chicago, Illinois, and then with Lloyd Brothers (Hoechst Pharmaceutical) in Michigan.  In 1963, he went on to establish and run an executive search and career coaching firm in Michigan called Duane I. Wilson Associates.  Finally, he established another company, VERITAS:  Truth in Capabilities, which was a background verification company from which he never seemed to actually retire.

He experienced profound sadness in this life with the loss of his first wife, Helen, in 1985, and the death of his dear son Keith in 2000.  Mr. Wilson was the last of his siblings, ten in all, to pass away.

He remarried in April of 1995 to Ellen Clarke.  They had known each other since working together at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Chicago.

Mr. Wilson was a resident of Troy, Michigan, from 1961 until his death.  He and his wife split their time between Michigan, southern California and Vermont until his health failed.

He had a keen mind and many interests.  He held several patents for inventions, belonged to many organizations and was an avid writer.  He loved to golf, bowl and was a professional horseshoe pitcher.  He enjoyed stamp collecting and joined a stamp collecting club in his later years.  He was always researching current events with his computer and belonged to a computer club in California as well.

Finally, he liked people and people liked him.  He was a wondrous storyteller with an imagination as big as a child’s.  He had a deep and abiding faith that sustained him in times of deep sorrow, of which he surely did experience.  Though successful in business, his most profound success is his legacy of love and care.

He leaves behind his wife Ellen of Laguna Woods; as well as his nephews:  John Wilson of Del Mar, California, and Earl Wilson of Connecticut.

Interment is at Hillside Cemetery in East Charleston.
