NEWPORT — If the charges filed against Lisa Gaylor, 40, of Barton stand up in court, her story may be one of a fox guarding the henhouse, according to the affidavit filed by Vermont State Police Detective Sergeant Joshua Mikkola. Sergeant Mikkola’s affidavit says Thomas Howell, himself a former State Police Trooper and currently head of administration at Jay Peak Resort, called police on April 21 and said Ms. Gaylor, who worked as vault supervisor, had embezzled about $70,000 since the fall of 2025.
Mr. Howell told police he interviewed Ms. Gaylor and that she admitted stealing the money to pay gambling debts, Sergeant Mikkola said. He said he took over investigating the case with the aid of documents provided by Mr. Howell.
The affidavit says Mr. Howell told Detective Mikkola that on April 4, a vault clerk reported cash discrepancies and what she thought were altered or fabricated spreadsheets. It says the clerk said petty cash spreadsheets didn’t match, cash amounts had been changed by hand, and some transactions weren’t documented.
Sergeant Mikkola said he heard that money was missing from the vault on several occasions, but Ms. Gaylor offered a reason or excuse each time. He said ATM machines ….
