Newport Center fire ignites itself

NEWPORT CENTER — Melting and warm sunny days leave the ground between dry and wet conditions.  This can lead to the rare occasion of spontaneous combustion such as the one on April 10 that required the Newport Center Volunteer Fire Department’s help.

The call came in when two young men noticed a plume of white smoke in the back of a field on the north side of Route 105.  Familiar with the landscape around the smoke, the two knew no structures were near the location….
