In Newport, rates rise evenly

NEWPORT — At a special meeting held on April 30 to hear from two task forces, the council voted to approve a hefty increase in Newport’s water and sewer rates.  Water rates will jump by 36 percent starting with September’s bill and sewer rates will go up 27 percent.  As they enacted the rate hikes, council members ended the difference between metered and unmetered households in the cost of sewer services.

At the end of October 2024, the council voted to raise both water and sewer rates.  Water rates went up 6 percent for households that don’t have water meters to measure usage as well as those that are metered.

That month sewer charges for metered users went up by 8 percent and unmetered users saw their costs soar by 26 percent….
