BARTON — Taxpayers here recently received letters showing their property values after the recently completed townwide reassessment. At their June 3 meeting, members of the Barton Select Board discussed online discussions that suggest some think increased values will automatically mean higher taxes.
Select board member Ted Gattino said he has seen a lot of comments that suggest to him a lack of understanding of town finances. His colleague Dee McDowell asked Clerk and Treasurer Kristin Atwood what townspeople should know about the reappraisal effect on taxes.
Ms. Atwood said she would confine her remarks to municipal taxes, although she volunteered to have a private conversation about the statewide education tax with anyone who cares to ask.
“Municipal taxes are very basic,” Ms. Atwood began. “You take your budget and divide it by your grand list. Our grand list has almost doubled, our budgets were level funded, which means that the tax rate will be cut almost in half. If you ….
