Hemp legislation seeks to make 2020 a better year

Swept up by the promise of easy money, hundreds of Vermonters registered to grow hemp in 2019.  Many were first-time farmers, the majority were concentrated in the Northeast Kingdom, and many failed to profit. 

All told, last year was a proverbial Wild West for hemp in the state.  Acres went unharvested, contracts promising big payouts have yet to be fulfilled, and supply outstripped both demand and the capacity of processors to convert raw flowers into marketable products.  Farmers slept in their fields with guns to guard against theft.
