Hamilton, saved by veterinary skill

Hamilton the donkey suffered a close brush with death only hours after being born July 9. Through mishap, the quivering bundle of flesh, bone and spirit slipped from his mother’s womb into a filthy puddle at Arnold’s Rescue Center in Brownington, a sort of refuge or retirement home for down-on-their-luck critters.  By the next dawn, the rare Baud du Poitou donkey was in ‘total sepsis’ — infected through and through. Hamilton was rushed 160 miles to the Myhre Equine Clinic and Hospital in Rochester, New Hampshire.  His death would have been a crusher for the veterinarians, researchers and animal rescue folk trying to revive the ancient line of Poitou donkeys.  Hamilton is thought to be the first of the breed….
