Demo derby a smashing success

BARTON — Over 110 cars turned out Sunday afternoon prepared to test their mettle and their metal in the Orleans County Fair’s Demolition Derby.  Organizer Bernie Butler had his work cut out for him as he juggled schedules to deal with the unpredictable mix of cars he had to wrangle into competition.

As automotive trends have changed over the years and gas prices soar, the number of four bangers in the competition has grown while there are fewer eight cylinder behemoths.  Squeezed in between there were not enough six-cylinder models to justify preliminary heats this year.

Mr. Butler’s efforts were a great success as a grandstand full of spectators got two wild feature competitions, both of which ended in long ferocious duels, as well as a first time event — team competition.  The proceedings were enlivened by the presence of Dylan Tester, alias DJ Loud, on the mic.  Mr. Tester brought tunes and his PA system to provide entertainment while incapacitated vehicles were pulled or lifted out of the arena.

As always the Orleans Fire Department and Orleans Emergency was on hand to take care of emergencies.  Although there was plenty of smoke and steam, the firefighters were not called on to exercise their skills, and there were no major injuries to report.
