Tim Ashe seeks Auditor’s job

BARTON — Tim Ashe has worked as a staffer for Senator Bernie Sanders, served on the Burlington City Council, and, as a member of the Vermont Senate, headed that chamber’s finance committee and served as President Pro Tem.  For the past five years, he has held the title of deputy state auditor working under Vermont Auditor of Accounts Doug Hoffer.

Mr. Hoffer has chosen not to seek reelection this year, and Mr. Ashe is running as the Democratic candidate for the position.  His opponent, Ivar Kronick, of Poultney, was nominated for the position after Republican H. Brooke Paige, who ran successfully for his party’s nomination to several posts, withdrew his name from the ballot to focus on the race for Secretary of State.

On Friday afternoon, Mr. Ashe stopped by the Chronicle’s office for a conversation about his campaign.  The first question posed to him was one he has heard more than once — exactly what does the Auditor of Accounts do?

“I’ll answer that in a couple ways,” Mr. Ashe began.  “Short story is that the auditor’s task is to make sure that state government is behaving as it should financially ….
