NEWPORT — After a week-long trial in the Criminal Division of Orleans County Superior Court here, a jury found Darryl Johnson, 54, of Greensboro innocent of second-degree murder and manslaughter.
The charges stemmed from an incident on October 20, 2021, when Mr. Johnson shot and killed 27-year-old Robert Chaplin of Hardwick. Police said Mr. Chaplin showed up in Mr. Johnson’s drive after the two had a minor altercation at a convenience store.
The events leading up to the shooting began at the Kwik Stop and Deli, a convenience store and gas station located at the intersection of Routes 15 and 14 on the west side of Hardwick.
