At North Country Union High School, building shows its age to visitors

NEWPORT — When testing in October 2024 showed that PCB levels in the three wings of North Country Union High School had been brought down to acceptable levels, students and teachers were able to return to their classrooms.  Many in the community thought that meant the school building was in good shape and free of the toxic chemical.

Neither assumption was correct, according to school officials, who have been guiding tours for members of the public to show both how contamination remains an issue and that even without the chemical pollution, there are a host of issues that will have to be addressed in the near future.

North Country Union High School has been holding a series of meetings intended to let the public see the building’s failings.  On May 20, the school invited elected officials to come and take a tour and see the problems with their own eyes. ….
