Stolen flag finds its way home

NEWPORT — Time, they say, heals all wounds, but almost everyone finds it hard to recover when a treasured possession is seized by the unseen.  But what does someone do when a treasure they wrote off as long gone returns?  A man in Derby found himself in just such a situation and now wonders where his father’s flag flew while he was not its keeper.

John Moore used to run a dry cleaning business on East Main Street in Newport.  Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, Mr. Moore wanted to show his support for the nation while it grieved.  To do this he decided to fly the American flag in front of his store.

It wouldn’t be just any flag though.  It would be a special flag, one that was used to honor Mr. Moore’s father, Charles, a veteran of World War II. …
