NEWPORT — Michelle Miller, 23, who according to Vermont State Police Trooper Aaron Leonard’s affidavit, has no fixed address, called police around 9 p.m. on June 14, 2023. She was in Westfield and told the dispatcher that a family member, who was mentally ill, was having an issue with her.
Ms. Miller provided no other information and the call was disconnected.
When Trooper Leonard and Trooper Logan Miller got to the Westfield address, about a half hour later, they were met at the door by the family member and a man. The family member had blood on her head, face, and hands with a visible injury on the top of her head. She was holding a cloth or towel to the wound.
Although Newport Ambulance was on the scene, the family member did not want to be taken for further medical treatment.
Ms. Miller was found seated on a second-floor landing outside her family member’s bedroom. She had poured a line of uncooked rice on the floor at the top of the stairs.
She sat on a bench in front of a coffee table on which was a lit candle, a glass bong, which she said held tobacco, and a feather. Ms. Miller told Trooper Leonard the candle, feather, and rice were for “spiritual protection” from demons. …
