GLOVER — Ziggy Bird has never been in a derby before, you know, the kind where cars smash into each other and try to be the last one standing. When she saw the Orleans County Fair Demo Derby in 2021 though, she knew she had to be in one someday.
Last year, touring with Bread and Puppet kept her from seeing the derby, but this year Ms. Bird was determined to participate. She hawkeyed Facebook Marketplace for months, looking for the perfect lemon to turn into a demo car.
A couple of months ago Ms. Bird bought a 2012 Ford Focus for $400. She calls it “a zippy little car,” and has been working on prepping it ever since….
