NEWPORT — After Newport voters sent a proposed city charter revision to a crushing defeat at March’s annual meeting, Mayor Rick Ufford-Chase and the city council members who worked on the draft and supported it, dropped the idea for several months.
In June, though, the council decided to move forward on finding acceptable changes to a document that has been in place for over a hundred years with minimal changes. Members appointed a task force to look at the current charter and see where it can be improved.
The group has been meeting quietly, holding two four-hour-long meetings a week on Monday and Wednesday mornings in the city council chambers. Members of the task force are not entirely happy with the quiet part of their work. They want more Newport citizens to hear and take part in their discussions, in order to avoid another electoral disaster.
