Source of prison COVID outbreak still unknown

NEWPORT — State contact tracers have been unable to determine how the coronavirus made its way into Northern State Correctional Facility here, Commissioner of Corrections Jim Baker said during a press conference on March 4.  Nor can they explain how the virus traveled between housing units once inside the prison.

Commissioner Baker was able to outline the timeline for the outbreak which, as of Monday, had seen more than 135 inmates and 12 staff members test positive for the virus.
