NEWPORT — Jennifer Simard, 49, of Brownington appeared in the Criminal Division of Orleans County District Court on June 9 and pled guilty to manslaughter in the 2016 stabbing death of Kevin Smith.
Ms. Simard originally pled innocent to charges of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter almost exactly two years after Mr. Smith died. The two charges were based on the same set of facts, and a jury could have found her guilty of only one of them because of the prohibition against double jeopardy in the U.S. Constitution.
