Newport Center brook to run free

NEWPORT CENTER –  Through the center of this town, a small brook flows.  Coiling through the fields along the southern side of Route 105, the moving water has been held back by an old dam that sits beside the fire department.  While the area of water that it impounded was once a pond worthy of fishing and ice skating, the dam has not been properly maintained, so a less appealing waterway has formed.  Plans are being made to change this and let nature take its course, with the dam being removed and the stream left to return to its original state.

On Friday morning community leaders, members of various groups involved in the process, and residents who live nearby the project gathered to discuss the dam’s removal and ask questions about the endeavor…..
