LOWELL — If the COVID-19 pandemic teaches nothing else, it teaches that things inevitably change. For students at Lowell Graded School, a plan that started with a goal to build a skating rink has morphed over time to a project to regenerate the Lowell Community Trail Network in Gelo Park.
In 2019, under the direction of humanities teacher Michael Brooks, seventh graders wrote a grant request to the Vermont Rural Education Collaborative (VREC), through which they got $1,500 to build a skating rink — the maximum grant that was possible.
