NEWPORT — A fire burns low but hot at Journey to Recovery (JTR) on Friday afternoon, its embers used to grill burgers and meats to feed hungry campers at midday. A slackline is strung taut between two nearby trees. Hand-carved benches, built just for the camp, surround the fire.
Journey to Recovery, a program designed to provide support to people seeking to move away from dependance on drugs and alcohol and to help their families as well, started its survival camp because workers noticed students from local schools often feel isolated during the summer. The organization’s staff felt the need for fun activities during school vacation.
JTR’s executive director Lila Bennett noted there is a purpose in the camp that goes beyond simple summer pleasures….
