The remnants of an unusual early season hurricane swooped over Vermont Wednesday night, July 10, unleashing a torrent of rain on the first anniversary of last year’s floods. After a wet June and early July, the results were predictable, high water and destructive flooding.
Several inches fell overnight, and by the morning of July 11, the storm had passed. In its wake, though town officials and local residents were once again in the situation of assessing damage and starting the hard work of clean-up and repairs.
While yards along the Barton river were again underwater, the levels were enough below those of last year’s deluge to avoid that degree of damage. In other places, that escaped with a smaller degree of damage last year, this year’s storm was catastrophic. …
